How PI firms are closing the billboard attribution gap

Personal injury firms are among the biggest buyers of out-of-home advertising in America — and among the least able to say what any single board actually produces. Firms keep buying because billboards work in aggregate. Which ones work is the question nobody could answer.

Why “how did you hear about us?” fails

The traditional answer is to ask. But claimants don’t remember which board they saw, on which highway, facing which direction — they remember “a billboard,” if that. Multiple touchpoints blur together: a board planted the name, a search delivered the click, and the credit lands wherever the intake form puts it. Impression estimates fill the reporting gap with traffic counts, which measure exposure, not outcomes.

The result: renewal decisions get made on gut feel, and the media company selling the board can’t prove its best faces are its best faces.

Attribution has to start on the board

The fix isn’t better surveys — it’s making the board itself the first tracked touchpoint. When every face carries its own unique QR code, the scan is the attribution: timestamped, located, and tied to one specific placement. No recall required, no guesswork, no shared credit.

“Impression estimates measure exposure. A signed retainer traced to one board face measures the thing you actually bought.”

From scans to signed cases

A scan alone is a weak signal — anybody can scan a code. The chain matters: scan → guided intake → qualified lead → signed case, each step carrying the same board attribution forward. When the retainer is signed, the dashboard doesn’t say “billboards worked.” It says this face, on this highway, signed this case.

What changes when you can see it

Firms that see face-level outcomes stop renewing placements evenly and start concentrating spend where cases actually come from. Creative gets tested like digital: two messages, two boards, real signed-case results. And the conversation with the media company changes on both sides — the boards that perform become easy renewals, and the ones that don’t become negotiations backed by data instead of doubt.

AALEC: “Every case file I deliver carries its source — the exact board face, the scan time, the full chain from highway to retainer. You’ll never have to ask a client which billboard it was.”
